Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

SuccessMaker is an online learning program designed for K-8 grade that covers math and reading concepts. This program has lessons, reviews, and assessments integrated within the site. As each student follows the program, it will automatically adjust to each of their own individual learning needs - staying on a topic or moving forward when appropriate. Unfortunately, this program is not free to just anyone - the school district must pay for it; however, there are no ads. Although there is no collaboration between teacher/student or student/student, the program gives immediate feedback and uses scaffolding techniques to question students and lead them in the right direction. Students use the program to learn and assess themselves; meanwhile, teachers can keep track of each student's progress. It is an appropriate program to be used in schools and by kids of all ages; however, it is not meant to be used past 8th grade. Students must all have a login given to them by the district, so the program is very safe!

Educational Uses of Site

We use this tool in our school every day. We have a 45 minute "club period" every morning in which our 7th and 8th grade students use SuccessMaker. Using this program, students can learn new topics or revisit old topics, practice certain concepts, and then test themselves to see if they are ready to move forward. This gives students a good idea of where they might fall in relation to their peers. The program covers Common Core standards that students will need to be familiar with when taking the Keystone tests eventually in 9th or 10th grade. Teachers can use the program to assess student achievement. The program is constantly being personalized for the student using it; therefore, teachers can easily keep track of how fast or slow students are moving. They can also get an idea of what topics need to be further explained in class and what topics the students understand well.

Review of Site

Personally, I think this program is a great idea! In my classroom, the reason I find some students struggling is because they do not have the proper prerequisite knowledge for certain topics. With successmaker, a student cannot move on until the previous concept is mastered. I also like how they use scaffolding to get a student to the correct answer instead of just simply telling them. Overall, SuccessMaker is a great tool - the only thing I don't necessarily like (our students would probably agree) is the fact that they must do this every single day. The kids are allowed to also complete it at home, but they must work for 45 minutes every morning on SuccessMaker. The kids then get frustrated and sometimes want to give up.
